So I am using a large Oxford Mig welder to do a lot of welding on a farm and for other bits and pieces. We have made up a set of pallet forks for a 20 ton excavator on the farm. We used bolt on headstock from another attachment but now need to weld a permanent headstock to the pallet forks. We went to a large metal merchant and got some lengths of hardened steel solid 65mm pins. When we got them the guys at the merchant said that others had bought them and needed to buy "special rods" as weld would not stick to the steel otherwise.
Just trying to work out how I go about welding the 65mm hardened steel pins. I am using 1.2mm wire in the machine. Is this not something that can be Mig welded without doing something special?
