I thought I'd caught the mounting nut as it slowed down but I checked and it would only tighten it if it hit the ground.
They are deliberately designed so that as they are used they tighten themselves, the reason I asked about a brake is if the motor tried to slow quicker then the momentum of the disc that could try and undo the nut.No brake and the grinder is virtually new...
I know it's frowned upon, but I always nip the nut up using the spanner when I fit a disc - not hauling on it, just an extra snug.
Never had one come loose by itself though
I've noticed when using Hitachi grinders on 1mm discs the raised part of the nut goes down through the disc and into the driving bit. When put on the other way the disc feels tight but comes loose when using it.
Every other grinder i've used the raised bit of the nut has to be away from the 1mm discs.
That's a good point, it's possible but I'd have thought it wouldn't be very well balancing like that and it was running smoothly. If its virtually brand new, was the backing nut seated properly? If its caught on the edge, and then the disc used it might rattle itself into place, allowing the nut to come loose.
Perhaps one of those things that never happens again. Could of been a number of things that may of caused it. A bit of spatter or swarf between the disc and nut when you tightened down? Could of come out in motion making things go lose , seating ring not quite located on that occasion? Who knows. Try again see what happens just take care and watch out. If it happens regularly then there is something your either doing wrong or an error/fault with the grinder because they shouldn't come lose. Mine are just nipped up with a gloved hand and they don't come off they get tighter. That's a good point, it's possible but I'd have thought it wouldn't be very well balancing like that and it was running smoothly.
Richard, it doesn't have any o rings on it.
This grinder has the nut that goes both ways round depending on what thickness disc you use. I always nip up the nut with the spanner but not stupidly tight. I put the disc back in and it was OK after
