Hi everyone started this project a while ago but first attempt didn't go too far , essentially it's been a fail.
I've tried to make one starting from scratch as I did with my Eastwing style slag chipping hammer which it's been a success
which has been made essentially completely from E7018 rod with the edges and the handle made with a jackhammer chisel and flat bar.
I've tried the same but failed so no picture of it
That's the goal
That's the starting point ,a 600mm handle and a 4lbs (2.04kg) silverline felling axe with a very long handle.
This morning I've cut off the handle (which will become the tool to move logs around, sorry but I can't remember how it's called)
And took the head with me at work
Drove out the piece stuck into the axe using a 100 ton press , and I have to say that it was well fitted the wood took with him pieces of metal from the axe .
Apparently it looks like it was epoxy glued , pressed, then wooden wedge and two 40mm (yep 40mm ) cylindrical steel wedges to keep everything together .
Each wedge has 4 conical steps .
I'm pretty confident that it wouldn't even ever came loose ,but unfortunately I don't need such big axe or at least not at the moment who knows
That's the beginning of it .
I have to grind the exceeding material and give it the shape I want.
It has a nice profile ,not thin like the small forest axe but enough good for me.
I have to modify the eye Shape little bit but nothing that my die grinder and a good file can achieve.
That's a weekends project .
I'll probably complete it in August or September .
This thread will see many updates and pictures too .
I'll probably make also a leather sheath for it
