I'm at an aerospace factory today, I've been working with them for the last 15 years, sadly it's the last time I'm going to see this client
Anyway I walked past this room and saw the massive granite table covered in mess, so went to have a closer look. Turns out that at the last inspection it didn't make the required grade. So this chap was lapping it back flat. He was using silicon carbide grit, 240 then 800. Some grit on table, splash of water and an upturned cast iron surface table with a weight on it to rub the grit into the granite. He said it was around 14 hrs work by hand to get the table to spec, plus or minus 2 microns
I stopped and chatted with the man and he showed me all his old school tools for hand scraping etc, his son was with him too, he was the apprentice
Awesome to see some real old school skills.
