So I've bought a knackered cold saw that I'm hoping to resurrect. The worm gear has stripped but the rest of the saw is fine.
I'm on the hunt for a new spare but if that becomes a dead end I'm going to have a go at machining a new one.
The worm shaft itself is steel and seems to be a mix of imperial and metric, it's major diameter is 25mm and the minor diameter is 17mm with a tooth thickness of 2mm on the tip and in the valley but it's 4tpi.
I can replicate the worm in tool steel to create a hob but what material to use for the worm gear.
I can get for similar money:
Brass CZ121
Phosphor Bronze PB102 or PB104
Bronze LG2 or LG3
What would be the best material for a gear?
Then I will have a go at free hobbing the gear on the lathe
It's shown from 16:50 in the video above.
