Got the steel sliders for the motor clean. I took the plunge and bought a set of pullers, then got some circlip pliers and a set of metric/imp Allen keys which come in a case like a little book, very nice and they'll no doubt come in handy on other jobs as well so an investment. These tools allowed me to get all the bits off like the base of the pillar (bolted on but two hex grub screws to get off before it slides out), the spring adjuster (which was never tightened and explains why the thing didn't recoil) and the cast ring above the chuck, which after I took off reminded me I needed a C spanner. Well, 3 out of 4 tools purchased was good enough for me, and I didn't need to force the chuck off the taper so I left that be.
So onto the spring, which I wanted to tighten again. I looked in the middle and it was a bit munted, having popped out of the cross-cut on the bar at some point in time. I think there's no better sound of instant regret than a coil spring fluttering out. It had to be done though, and with some (very) careful plier work I bent it back to shape and tightened it back up with some plumbing grips and a rag to protect the blued steel, then tapped it back in. I do not want to do that again lol.
All but three handles have almost 100% chrome, but the motor control ones are really flakey. I need new grease for the machine too. Call me pedantic but I have trawled Google images for every data plate I could find with the recommended greases and have come up with a list if anyone else is interested.
- Shell Livona Grease 3 (discontinued) - *Became - Shell Alvania R2 (discontinued) - *Now Shell Gadus S2 V100 2
- Vacuum Grease BRB No3 (discontinued) - This company became part of Mobil. The actual name is Socony-Vacuum, helpfully not on the data plate
- Wakefield Spheerol S (discontinued with no replacement)
- Wakefield Spheerol AP2 (discontinued) - *Wakefield became Castrol and I think this is now sold as Castrol Spheerol AP3
- Castrol Castrolease LM - might be available still, can't be sure
- Esso Beacon 2 (discontinued) - Think you can now get this as Beacon EP 2 Moly
- Esso Beacon 3 (discontinued with no replacement)
- Esso Firmax 2 (discontinued with no replacement)
I'm going to go with Shell Gadus as that's the most reliable product 'tree' I could follow.
Cheers
