Hi knowledgeable folks,
I’m refurbishing an old cast iron stove for a friend and there were a few parts simply beyond repair. One was the flue collar, and the original part is no longer manufactured. I’ve acquired a collar from a later model but it isn’t quite the same.
On the original there is a raised lip around the underside of the collar which is a sloppy fit into a step in the hole in the top of the stove, but the new part is flat. I can’t find a diagram or any details explaining whether fire rope gasket or putty would be used here and whatever was there before has long since disintegrated.
Any suggestions? I see flat fire rope is available, would this be a suitable seal? Or putty/cement?
You can also see that there is quite a gap between the fixings and it looks like this caused the original part to break? I’m tempted to make up a spacer of some sort, or is the gap perhaps intentional to allow some movement?
If it was just me running it I’d have thrown it together by now but as it’s for someone who probably won’t spot problems I’d be glad of advice on this.
