First time sprayer, few paint questions

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and have already been through all 19 pages or so and have learnt a great deal.

I want to do a bit of spraying on the car, nothing major, I want to sort out the underside of my front bumper as it's scraped to hell, i know you can't really see it but it annoys me

I think i'm good with compressor and spray gun but I'm still a bit confused on some of the paint options, i'm not going near 2k stuff, don't have the equipment for it so i've been lookig at using the paint linked below.

It says it's BSB basecoat and the only reason I was looking at that was due to it not being referred to as 2k and that it says in the description that it's a matt base coat which I could then put a 1k clear over the top. Is this the right kind of paint I should be using? The factory paint on the car is PPG which I assume is 2k(it's a solid colour with clearcoat) although this will be going on the underside I'd still like a relatively decent finish.

I take it BSB would need thinning? There is a thinner on the same website(link below) but it says it's for 2k solids or BSB metallics, can it still be used on a BSB solid colour?

How does BSB, cellulose and 2k differ, struggling to find a clear explanation of the different types.

chances are you would thin that 50/50 but ask the seller when you order

the 2k bit refers to direct gloss and clear coat that have a hardner added ,once its mixed you have a couple of hours tops to use the paint and then it chemicly hardens , its the hardner thats the dangerous stuff

Hello welcome and yes paint jargon can be confusing. B2B is the name that describes the solvent route of the car acrylics. I bought a tin of the equivalent (IC from Valspar) and they recommended 1:1 thinning the 0,5l, that amounts to 1 liter you can spray.

Thanks for the replies so far, so is BSB the same as Cellulose?

For 2K is it just the hardener for the clearcoat that's dangerous or is there a hardener in the colour coat also?

So if I use the BSB baeecoat and 1K clearcoat there's nothing in there that'll kill me providing I use a decent mask? And it'll go over the existing paint ok?

While i'm here I migh as well ask a gun question, i'm looking at either the devilbiss FLG5 full size gun or devilbiss sri mini gun, i really don't want to spend a massive amount on a gun and i've read good things about the FLG5 but don't see an equivalent value mini gun hence why i'm looking at the more expensive sri. For my bumper am I better having a full size gun or mini? It's not going to be a massive paint area so will a full size gun have enough adjustment in the fan size for a smaller repair?

correct theres no really bad stuff in basecoat , use the 1k clear and you should be ok with a decent quality mask

Thanks Steve, think i'm going to give it a go with the basecoat and 1k clear, I think i'd really need to screw this up royally for it to look worse than it does now with big gouges and scratches all over it

If anyone has any thoughts on the gun questions above any info would be much appreciated

mini gun will just about cope with a bumper , for the price they are its hard not to reccomend one

you can do small jobs with a big gun. but not big jobs with a small gun.
under a bumper i'd be thinking of stonechip first,then colour coats.

Hi Jaykay,

Does stonechip not leave a funny texture? I don't beleive there's anything on there like that right now. I'll try and post a pic of it tomorrow so you guys can see what the damage is like.

And good advice on the gun, that was all I was looking for, if the big gun will offer more versatility then i'll go for that

yeah mostly leaves a stippled finish like you often see on sills etc , tbh it wont help against scrapes so id just paint and drive carefully

Not all basecoats have the same thinner ratio, some are 50-50, some are 2-1, get the data sheet for the product as that gives you all the info you need

Thanks guys for all the help, yeah I think i'll give the stonechip a miss, one of the main reasons i'm doing this myself is because I know i'll scrape the bumper again, if I can just sort it out myself once a year or so i'll not feel so bad everytime I hear it grounding

Just looking at the thinning ratio's again, the link to my data sheet is below

What confuses me is the little graphic at the top it says 1000ml+400ml-1000ml eh?

Then lower down the page it says for HS solids 1000 parts basecoat 400 parts thinner, so that would suggest slightly less than 2:1 correct?

Above where it gives mixes for "HS Cycle" where 1000 to 400 features for solid paint it gives mixes for "Traditional Cycle" which includes ratios of 1000 to 1000. Hence the graphic of 1000 to 400-1000.

A question worth asking is what are "Traditional Cycle" and "HS Cycle"?
