Hi All
Great forum, I have been reading posts with interest for a while now and about to take the plunge and buy myself a MIG. I am restoring a Triumph Stag and need to do some work on the OS floor and outriggers.
I have done a small amount of work some years ago with gas and Arc (still have the old Arc) but nothing with a mig so will be doing a few pratice jobs before setting out on the car.
I was looking to get the clarke 160tm as this seems to get good reports. But having considered the options and costs I am looking at the following as I think it offers a decent budget starting point and Machine Mart have a VAT free day on next weekend.
Clarke MIG151EN Turbo 'No-Gas' MIG Welder. This is £190 plus VAT Then I was looking to buy the gas regulator conversion and wire from WeldEquipe to use either Co2 or an Argon mix and getting my own bottle as I am sure my practicing will use many small bottles up otherwise! I could also do some practice with no gas to start with as it comes set up that way, so I might as well use the wire!.
Question is do you think this is a decent machine as it seems to offer good value for the money, and as I want to run it with gas and the larger bottles the other "gas" models only come with the small regulator which I wont need. This model seems to have the same specs as the 151te gas machine or have missed something on the specs of the machines..apart from the different case? The price difference is nearly £60??
If so, I reckon I could be up and running for around £300+ new Helmet etc.(depending on what I go for on the gas) Again would welcome your thoughts on that , Argon mix seems to get better results ? I realise the bottle and refills will be more but I can at least get the right regulator from the start.
Any advice and pointers welcome
Cheers
Glyn
