Hello all,
I am a fulltime employee, but in my spare time I am always making, creating and repairing things. My main project at this moment is restauring a 1957 Landrover, and maintaining the other one (S3 ambulance).
All the welding I do is done with my Conti-Weld MIG machine. This is a heavy piece of equipment, but I like the machine and its welding quality. I thought of replacing it with a modern inverter one, but the only reason would be space/weight.
To expand the repairing capabilities I would like to be able to TIG-weld aluminium, especially because the Landrover's body is made from aluminium. As with every piece of equipment, once you have it, you start seeing possibilities for it. One day I hope to turn some of my thoughts in to products that might also be interesting for other people. But for now, I'm just hobbying. I normally don't do an awfull lot of welding.
I am currently at the point where I can go left on the chinese hobby machine, or right on the path of the slightly better machines. Straight ahead in the direction of professional machines exceeding € 1500,- is not an option, the expense is something that I can't justify...
On the chinese side there are the Jasic machines, which seem to be the best of this lot.
There are two models:
- Jasic TIG 200P AC/DC (101) for about € 799,- (version with a lot of buttons/knobs)
- Jasic TIG 200P AC/DC D (104) for about € 949,- (this is the digital version)
Other brands might be also an option however.
On the slightly better side there are obviously the Gys machines, especially:
- GYS TIG 207 AC/DC HF FV, which can be bought for around €1570,- with a little luck.
Is it worth spending the money on the GYS, if it would be my first AC/DC welder, and first experience with that welding method? Would I run in to the limitations on the cheaper ones, or are they also perfectly able to assist me in the coming years? Is the digital Jasic preferred or not really?
It feels silly to spend so much money on something that is used for hobby, but on the other hand..if the chinese machine disappoints me, or breaks down...I feel even more stupid.
At first I thought of buying a machine that also does plasma cutting, but I don't think that will bring me the best of all worlds in the end. I have both 230v and 400v available at home, and a cylinder with mix-gas and one with pure argon are already in my garage.
I have looked at all the topics on these machine's, but I hope you can give me the last push in to a specific direction.
Thank you in advance!
