Still struggling here to figure out what numbers to put forward! Not easy...
Just tell him you have no idea & ask him if he has a price in mind. With the lack of info/photo's, it's nigh on impossible to give an indication of possible worth.
Give him a low offer. It's amazing how quickly they usually come uo with a suggestion.
Price wise on the saw, provided it's not rusted or abused to death, £100 tops would be my suggestion. With the shaper, I'd not be inclined to offer any more, due to the fact you have no idea of either overall or working condition. It could be a potential gem, but it could just as easily be a large paperweight.
Noticed a trend in my area on facebook selling pages asking for offers these days instead of putting a price. Not because they dont know what they want for it but to hold a private auction via messenger.i said this to a bloke today was selling a laptop i said what price you looking for it mate reply dont know
me ok in that case it worth £5 to me reply you got to joking
me yes but if you dont want the £5 for it you got an idea what you want for it then or the £5 would have been enough
reply ok im looking for £150 me if you had said that right away i could have saved us both time and trubble it not worth that so im not intrested sorry

Buying machines unseen/untested is a risk which sometimes pays off. I bought my Fobco this way and it's turned out to be a lovely machine. The Harrison grinder on the other hand had a smashed up pulley, which I've just bought a replacement for - $30, 10% of what I paid for the thing! Factor in the potentiality for internal problems when buying old machinery and try to go as low as possible. It won't feel such a kick in the balls when you got them for a song if it turns out there's serious work/new parts needed.
