I have used thick mineral oil before and Vaseline for oil pump but the engine has a known fitting time and was a only a Vaux four pot with some new rings.
This lump is bit more special and he'll of lot more costly
Each to their own with build lube Paul, there are as many eminent engine builders out there that dont use it that have no problems. My own train of thought on this that the engine during a build will get turned over dozens of times , with the best will in the world the build lube will get wiped off the bores and some of the cam/lifters, there will be plenty of engine parts with no build lube in place when it does fire up. Also worth bearing in mind is all the gooky thick gear for the oil pickup strainer to try and hoover off the bottom of the sump on first fire up. My personal preference is a clean well oiled build, lag the thing in clingfilm to keep moisture and debris out ,prior to fire up spend plenty of time pre priming the oil galleries, filters and cooler lines. Not an argument, just a preference.
