With apologies to rockweasel, I'd steer clear of Yahoo. They've had two major breaches in the last few years and don't exhibit much evidence of learning from their mistakes. I'd also question how long they will be in business in their current state, given the (proposed) sale to Verizon.
Hotmail / outlook.com or gmail would be my suggestion for free email.

Used Gmail for years, never a problem.
Unless you are still using Outlook 2010 'cos they broke the Outlook Hotmail connector when they 'souped it up'Try outlook.com - the souped up version of hotmail
You get free online storage as well, good for photos etc.Try outlook.com - the souped up version of hotmail
That's weird that Orange are stopping their email service as I still have a @freeserve.co.uk which is the forerunner of @orange and that still works fine?
