This picture shows my 111 (perhaps also known as an "Elcometer Inspector"), which is an ancient device made by Elcometer. It determines paint thickness by measuring the force required to pull a magnet off a steel substrate. Back in the day, this was a quality device, widely used for checking the pipes that brought up North sea gas. Elcometer are still in business but making more sophisticated digital testers. The thumbwheel on the 111 is rotated to pull off the magnet, but it feels as though its bearing would very much benefit from a drop of oil. However, I can see no obvious way of opening this thing up.
Has anyone got any experience of these old gizzmos?
