This guy has just posted up pics of his own hand and arm. His hand was torn off at the forearm when his glove got caught in a lathe, and had to be re-attached by three surgeons in a 15-hr operation.

Rotating machinery and gloves or dangly clothing is bad; there are plenty of folk either dead in the ground or missing parts of their anatomy through wearing the wrong clothing.

I'd rather anyone didn't link to it as it's pretty horrific but there's a very gruesome sequence of pics showing someone who was dragged into a lathe and pretty much minced. I suppose the only upside is that he clearly would have died instantly.
I gather he was wearing a loose jumper which snagged and pulled him in, which you can see wrapped round the workpiece.
Really not for the faint-hearted but a google search will find them if you really must see them.

That guy in the first link was very lucky!!

I don't think he realises how little use it's going to be to him, or how much pain he's got coming. He's going to end up with little better than a club on his arm. I only cut a tendon and 2 nerves in my little finger this year, and it's caused me a lot of bother as a working man.

The only thing is I suppose having even very limited use of it is probably better than no use at all.

Daft as it sounds and in no way a comparison, but I sliced the end off my thumb a few yrs ago: I glued it back on, but using a touchscreen phone is a PITA, as I can't feel the end, so end up pressing the next one to the one I want. So god knows what he's going to be like.

That's gruesome. Some of the photos we were shown as part or airfield and hanger safety were of similar nastyness.

Clicked on that first link and gave up pretty quick as the page was taking ages to load. Shedloads of comments on there. Never got round to finding the actual info on the accident. I did, however, notice this bit before I closed the page. There's always one....

Got warned about that sort of thing when I was an apprentice mech on the buses, lot of rotating drive shafts under a bus. Apparently someone in a depot down south was adjusting/checking something and had the bus running, caught his overalls and got spun round in a very small gap. That was the early 90's, and I dare say its happened to some unlucky souls since... *touch wood*.

This video isn't gory, but is shocking. The lad was lucky to escape without losing his arm. If you look closely, I dont think it was his sleeve, but more likely his glove gripped the rotating bar.

Sadly if you read the link, in his case he knew gloves were a no no but the american equivalent of the H&S rep and his company mandated he wear them as he worked in a bakery maintenance machine shop at a working industrial bakery therefore fell under factory food hygene rules which make them mandatory.
