As above, the compound is not used for many cuts. Sometimes for threading, definitely for short tapers, but mostly for facing cuts (when the carriage is locked down).
But I wouldn’t remove it from my lathe, because when it is useful, it needs to be there. I occasionally turn between centres, so cutting a taper is not that rare for me.
