the most mportant factor is the size of your bar, Gordon alluded to that when he said skim a few thou off. Bar stock could be a few thou up on nominal size which makes threading very difficult, if not impossible. 12.000 mm will be hard work, 11.900 mm will make all the difference even with a non split die, using the lathe as someone suggested to keep the die square and help it along.
