I'm still neglecting my Mini project but who can resist the opportunity to make a lamp from a straight 6 Merc crankshaft?
The base is made from a laser cut 3MM disc that a grabbed from the floor of the scrap yard and a 2MM off cut that I rolled in my newly acquired slip roller. It's always good make an entire project about testing a new tool. :P
I've seen a few crankshaft lamps that I wasn't fond of the routing of the cable in the open so I've knocked something up using drilled out stainless cap head bolts and 1/2" stainless pipe work.
The top section of the lamp is another reclaimed item that got a bit of modification. This and the feed tube for the cable will be polished and base will be gloss black.
I'm not too sure on the finish for the crank yet but I think it might look good vapour blasted and lacquered.
In a slightly less fancy side of things I found myself in need of a new toilet roll holder at home so decided to make something. After sketching up a fancy wavy thing I realised I had no way to form it and ended up cutting some 12MM plate to shape and welding it to the vice to act as a press of sorts.
I'm not lucky enough to own a lathe so chain drilled and rough ground the wall plate before mounting it in the drill press to finish it with a file.
I did the same for a smaller end disc before TIG welding everything together.
Another disc to hold the fresh rolls up. I'm really thinking I should invest in a lathe.
The top needed finisher so I cut down the end of a Mini knuckle joint and welded it on.
I'm quite fond of the heat pattern from the welding so I've lacquered it for the moment but I might chuck it in with my next batch of chrome.
