Hi!
I've just got myself a barely used Cosmo 200 Mig Welder, which is actually 25-150 amps range. It is in good condition but I seem to have
some problems with it - and was wondering if anyone had any advice?
(1) The wire spool spins freely and there is almost no resistance down the actual pathway to the welding gun. However, there is something wrong with the wire speed control : It stops + starts, and varies over a range of about three times. Looking at the mechanism, there is a little wheel which spins, but seems to be slipping on the wire sometimes. There is another wheel also above it, which spins freely when not pressed onto the wire. There is also a tension control for that wheel, but adjusting it doesn't help (too loose, and the wire slips, too tight, and it slips / grinds against the powered wheel.
Could it be that I've damaged the powered wheel? (it looks replaceable, and I think I managed to make it spin when the wire was jammed so it would have ground itself against the steel welding wire and maybe worn itself out?.
(2) I can turn up the speed etc, and the welder mostly works, despite the above (although until I fix the first problem I can't see me being able to make a good weld). However, if I take a piece of sheet metal, and just weld onto it (for practice). at any speed, the welds don't make good penetrance. I have just held the welder in one position, and you get a huge blob of molten metal, but, it doesn't penetrate at all - any advice on what I'm doing wrong?. How fast would you expect the welding wire to come out when welding onto a piece of 1.6mm steel?
Thanks for your help!
Matt
