End of story -- computer lives to fight another day.
My old PC (which conked out when the HDD connector went up in smoke) has been sitting in a cupboard for over a year. I knew the HDD was still OK, but thought the motherboard would probably have been destroyed. At long last I found time to fit another PSU today (cost the princely sum of £13), switched on and everything works perfectly.
I’m guessing a short at the HDD connector caused the PSU internal fuse to blow. Didn’t fancy taking the PSU apart, having read too many warnings about injury from touching capacitors.
Still seems a miracle that the motherboard survived, obviously a lot tougher than I had imagined..
