Hi all,
Thanks for taking the time to read my post, all advice is greatly appreciated.
I am currently restoring a classic mini, which has involved an awful lot of welding (which i learnt how to do using this website and additional help from my brother (trained welder), this site made me feel like it was at least possible to do on my own). Until the other day I was grinding down my welds, panel-wiping and spraying on Upol Acid 8 Etch primer. I had read on some mini forums and magazines that it was the best thing to do until the car goes to the paint shop.
Since then I have read another article saying that etch primer isnt't the way to go when it comes to covering bare metal - http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/proper-uses-acid-etch-primer-47329.html
Now I am confused.
What I want is a coating that I can use to cover bare metal, including repairs that will last. The car will eventually go to a bodyshop to be professionally resprayed.. but thats a little way off yet.. in the meantime I need to ensure no rust starts to form. I want to pay particular attention to cavities such as under the doorsteps and sills which I will only have one chance to paint before i close them up and cavity wax. Whats the best thing to paint the metal with in these areas?
Please can you advise on:
What to paint bare metal with?
What to overpaint the above paint with to ensure long life (if necessary in the case of cavities which will see no colour or top coat)?
And as a Brusey-Bonus, a good quality bodyshop in South London / Surrey for the final respray?
Many thanks again, all advice is appreciated.
