Hello I am a new member on this forum but I have been reading posts here for awhile. I need to be able to weld up to 1/4" aluminum (5052 or 6061) to modify my jon boat for duck hunting. I will making pods on the transom for more buoyancy, gun storage case, tubular frame on top of boat for a blind structure, small folding stair case for the dog, etc. After everything is done the boat will be painted so I do not care about discoloration of the material. I know extra precautions will be necessary for the amount of welding that will be done to prevent the material from warping.
I currently have a Campbell Hausfeld wf2000 (115V/70amps) flux core mig welder and a Super Elto 140 (110V/80AMPS, 220V/25AMPS) arc welder.
I looked into modifying the mig welder for a spool gun set up but 70amps is not enough to weld up to 1/4" thick aluminum. At best I could only weld 1/16" aluminum, not even close to what I need.
The super elto, if I get the right filler rod, would this arc welder be enough to weld up to 1/4" aluminum? For example 1/8-Inch 4043 Aluminum filler rods with the electrode on the positive end, would that work?
To weld up to 1/4" aluminum (5052 or 6061) what is the cheapest route? Please provide make and models of welders and the set up required. If it is a TIG or Spool gun I have done a lot of research on this type of welding. I have never used a TIG or Spool gun but I can practice and learn. Any information and advice is welcome.
