Right then, just had a go with 316 rods in three one inch runs, seemed to flow ok but i was a bit slow grabbing the blow torch (to aid the cooling process) and it pinged a nice crack in the middle where one bead meets another. Now it won't be under any load so will i get away with this?
Embarrassed about the craters at the ends of the piece too, you'd think i'd have learnt after doing it at one end Never needed to be pretty (good job too) so i'll either just file it with a round file to relieve any stress or should i build it up with a bit of weld?
Nearly all cast iron repairs where strength is not a major issue, can be very easily carried out using SIF No 8 phosphor bronze rod. Use DC neg and a thoriated tungsten with a nice sharp point.
MMA is an option, but is a real hassle compared to TIG brazing, and trying to TIG weld cast is generally a complete waste of time.
Repaired a water pump housing that had broken into 3 pieces (I didn't drain it over the winter). Used Sifbronze no 8 and it went quite well. Not pretty but the pump now works and doesn't leak. Biggest problem was not being able to clean the joint between welding sections as the access was from one side only.
