At JLR we're elegible for the Ford privelige scheme, starts at £99 a month for a Fiesta.
What about the old Ford cvh engine when the vv carb went wrong it was scrap, they wouldn't start when cold
Did that on an escort manifold and carbThat and the GM Varajet, straight in the bin and fit a Weber.
I thought the same on vv and I chucked the one away on my capri and fitted weber, but the 1.6 cvh escort I had later on worked really well but it was set up by a ford tech who understood themThat and the GM Varajet, straight in the bin and fit a Weber.
When the vv broke they wasn't repairable so you had to replace them, I never saw a capri with oneI thought the same on vv and I chucked the one away on my capri and fitted weber, but the 1.6 cvh escort I had later on worked really well but it was set up by a ford tech who understood them
yes unfortunately for 1979 1.6 models I chucked for a weber conversion with manual chokeWhen the vv broke they wasn't repairable so you had to replace them, I never saw a capri with one

yes I think it was the first year for VV I cant remember what the later cars had as I moved onto the bigger engine models with webers as standardNever ever saw one hmm strange
And how they have been driven and servicedI think the reliability issue is more often down to choice of car not age of car.
I'm going to make an assumption, and it may be wrong so if so, skip this...
Your cars are 13 and 15 years old. The assumption I'm making is they're not particularly special to you.
Clutch gone? Throw the car away - there's loads on gumtree and facebook for a couple of hundred quid, runners with long MOT.
Erratic running, random stalling? If mr AA can't say instantly something like "it's the idle control valve, they're 50quid to replace" then throw the car away - there's loads on gum.... etc.
I've got rid of a car before because it needed a set of tyres - it was cheaper to get another car...
Even if you splash out £450 on a car with a new MOT once a year you're still ahead

I used to make conversion kits up to replace the GM carb on the 2ltr Manta, Ascona & Cavalier RWD. Cortina 32/36 from the scrappy, rebuild, rejet and make an adaptor plate then stick on Autotrader for half the price of the Weber kit. Sold loads.
The 38DGAS of the Essex was a nice carb on the 2ltr Opel engine if you could tune around the idle to progression flat spot. Had 118rwhp from my Ascona with one fitted.
Anyway, I'm going a bit >>>>>>>fftopic:
Back on the subject of cars ...... our Astra G DTI died before Christmas with oil in the fuel and I was given a Vectra CDTI the next day. That has nearly as many faults as the Astra! So far I've spent £110 on it, discs & pads, caliper seals, CV gaitor, swirl flap repair kit and a cheap OPCOM to r eadthe poxy Vauxhall codes OBDII won't. Good news is I replaced the DMF & clutch on this a couple of years back which might help to see a bit of life out of the car. Should be a good car once I've replace the bit between the number plates.
Sadly I have only 1 photo of the DT. Still have Duncans Manta B here with a TVR Griffith engine & box in half finished.I had forgotten about your vauxhall times but I have not forgotten your Dt175 though
Buy a 1 to 2 year old car with say 20k miles on the clock for around 10k or so, say a golf or A3.
