Looking at the wear I'm guessing that the mating gear is also badly worn. Replacing just one would be a false economy in the long run. It may bw worth replacing those at the other end too. It may sound like an expensive repair but, if you intend bending more thick plate, it will pay for itself in the long term. I like the idea of an idler too, it allows you to buy stock gears rather than having specials made.
