The gas irons are superb, does yours have the removable tip where you can use the flame directly?
Cutting butter?I've got various tips for mine, naked flame, hot gas and even one that acts as a hot knife blade, although I haven't found a use for that one yet.

It's for cutting nylon rope, it melts the strands together so it doesn't fray/saves you from messing with a lighter.I've got various tips for mine, naked flame, hot gas and even one that acts as a hot knife blade, although I haven't found a use for that one yet.
You do know you can use a lighter or matches to light them if the ignitor fails?.i have a aldi gas soldering iron and its been great the last 4 years, unfortunately the ignitor has finally packed in so i bought an electric one from halfords for £11 using my trade card
can you? i find i end up with a flame comingout the exhaust hole rather than in the chamber if you know what i mean. You do know you can use a lighter or matches to light them if the ignitor fails?.

i tried it once with the tip off the end and it fires up great but if you put the soldering tip back on the gas lights at the exhaust and not at the burner where it should be.
to be honest when they have them in again i will buy another as this one is a bit battered.
After a while the catalyst starts to break down which both reduced the heat at the tip and causes flame to escape from the side of the burner. The only way to light all my gas irons is via the 'exhaust hole'. The trick is to keep the gas turned down low. Inside the iron there is a catalyst, that's the bit you see glowing orange and it spreads the flame to heat the tip. If you wait until the catalyst turns orange the flames coming out of the vents get drawn back inside. After a while the catalyst burns out & you can never get it lit properly, that's when you need a new tip!
Humph. That must by why the C15 irons go through elements superbly.ANTEX for me, wouldn't buy anything else now have a few ANTEX models, the quality is quite simply superb!
That, too. The first irons I bought happened to have silicone (or very flexible pvc) leads and I never thought anything of it, just taking it for fact they were all like that.Something I always do with a soldering iron is replace the PVC insulated cable with a silicone one - there's nothing worse than having an inflexible cable dragging the iron around when you are trying to do detail work.
