Talking to a guy in the pub and i notised he had a different puter mug to the one he would normally use ,he said that the handle had broken off, does anyone kkow how to weld puter
You need to solder it, it will need a low melting point solder specially made for the job, pewter melts at around 230C, so its very easy to turn a beer mug into a puddle on the bench, I have had some success using electricians solder, bakers fluid, and a copper tinsmiths iron rather than a flame for small repairs.
I don't think pewter can be welded because it's melting point is so low, you could probably find a low temperature solder it but it will be hard not to melt the pewter.
Find a website or a book about proper tinsmithing and it will probably tell you exactly what solder is needed to join the pewter parts back together.
I would use a sodding great iron, preferably one you heat on the gas, or a v.big electric jobby, clean and flux the joint faces (resin flux) then position the parts together and use the big iron to 'sweat' the parts together.
Pewter is 'sort of' welded in that a filler 'rod' cut off the parent sheet is used, but because of the low melting point it's really a soldering process
i soldered one up years ago with one of the old skool copper fire powered soldering irons, it dont leak but isnt pretty, and its scarey how quick you make a bigger hole!.... nothing ventured nothing gained!
My wife would solder that up in 30seconds flat using a small butane torch and solder for pewter. She is a jewellery maker and that's the sort of stuff she does all the time along with silver smithing and glass fusing.
