Hi guys I just bought a nice 160 amp inverter welder it came with a nice myking electrode holder. But the leads are only 16sq cable I was thinking of puting 25sq on it. Or will 16sq be ok. The earth lead is 3 meters and the electrode lead is 5 meters.
thicker leads are better but the extra weight of the leads will make it a bit more problemmatic when welding but if you can get them well cheap yes if was me i would upgrade but try it as it is
the volt drop on that lenth will minimal at those lenth if you cant get on with the cables on there at thee moment and you are going to pay to get better more flexable cables then just considder the weight but if i was paying £40 for new cables and the 25 mm where only and extra £10er yes pay the extra
poss look at slighty longer leads no matter what size ones you got there allways to short but 5m leads and 7m on the earth might be better
I think I will get 25sq cable . And a better earth clamp . I'll see can I get that myking electrode holder to fit as I really like it . It holds the electrode frim

if like the screw type one i got on the stick welder i got i just unscrewed it till the head come off the cable and clamp drops out you can then get to the screws to remove the old cable
My old Wolf 200 DC TIG inverter came with really short 25mm leads I up specked them to much longer 35mm jobs. Changed the welder to an AC/DC but I held onto the leads. I also made up a set of Dinze tails for my old Oxford so she no longer requires a set of dedicated leads.
I found some 25sq cable I had in the shed . I put the myking electrode holder on it and a decent screw type earth clamp on it . When I took the electrode holder off it wasn't very tight either were the dinze plugs I've a 5meter earth and a 5 meter electrode lead .
on a 160 amp 16mm 2 leads will be fine. think 16mm2 is rated at 110 amp coninuous. at 160 they get warm but so will your welder
on the vantage if stick welding i use 10mtr lengths 50mm2 as extension leads most of the way to where i'm working. then one of a few shorter whip leads 3-5 mtr of lighter cabel with electrode holders on them ( seem to mostly be from dead gys sets ) i genearly use the one with lightest cabel i can for the rods i'm running. very often a 16mm2 lead is plenty. rarely use more than 25mm 2 an overly heavy lead makes rod controll harder and gets tireing
I kinda didn't like the leads that came with it they weren't very flexible and that does interfere with rod control I find. Especially if your trying to repossion yourself. But that's just me
