At St Albans boot sale in ~1990, I paid a fiver for a B&D Pro 4.5" AG which was already a few years old. That thing is still going strong and for years it was the only AG I had. The only flaw it has is the stupid Q-D mains connector, which has a habit of developing a bad connection internally. I've found a supplier of them - for £15, with p&p that would be four times what I paid for the tool.
I bought one of those as my first angle grinder many years ago. I was manning a trade stand at a show & the next stand was selling tools. Got friendly with the guy & at the end of the show we did a deal for the display grinder, quite a few ££ less than the 'show special' price.
He informed me that the detachable cable was designed for the oil rig industry. They keep just the bare bodies in the store to save storage space, when a grinder burns out they chuck it in the sea & hook a new body onto the lead! No mention of the WEEE back then!
It stood some serious abuse as it was my only grinder for years but eventually burnt out.
