The local youth club has some goals made from aluminium that have fractured at the top. They asked me to have a look at it as a favour but I don't think I'll be able to weld it as a) my multi function machine is DC only and b) I've never TIGd before and don't really want to start on someone else's property.
Structurally, I would be able to repair it by making up a mild steel brace and wrapping the joint with it - that should get another couple of years out of the posts.
But I'm reading that aluminium in contact with steel is not a good idea - not only would the sleeve be wrapping the posts, but I'd need to put some steel bolts through them.
Am I right to be concerned? Do I need to send them to the shipyard, who'll charge them £100 for the repair?
