A catch for the original tab could be made from a bit of wide spring steel pallet banding. Its about 25mm wide, a 5mm bend in the end would hold it. Pop riveted to the other side; the type that expand to a star

Can find any 25mm its thicker as well. You get the idea

Probably need to make backing plates for the inside of the plastic case, and fix through with 4mm aluminium pop rivets.
Halfords at least used to do an assorted set for somewhere in the region of a tenner. I needed a couple of large ones urgently so got the set. It had loads of small ones I never have a use for which probably fit your use.R clip on a tether as security but cant find any small enough
