Hi all,
Had an interesting experience earlier. Have purchased some of those triangular welding magnets from Screwfix. I've used these before without any problems, but they were my dad's and decided he might hit me again if I stole his, so decided to purchase my own set. First use I had for them was to weld a 1/2 bit of tube to a 1" strip, making a sort of tee. I set it up, sat the lot on a sort of makeshift miniature welding table I've got (lump of plate), and went for it. BANG! FLASH!
Don't know what happened, but the magnet ended up welded to the 3/4" lump of steel I had it all sat on, and the tube welded to the magnet - only lightly, but good enough to leave a mark I couldn't grind out. I was welding at about 120A.
Any ideas what the funk is going on??? I'm scared of the flippin things now! All I can think of is that the magnets came with a light coating of what looks and feels like oil...
To add to the magnet mystery, I had some smaller magnets lying around and used these to hold an intricate bit of sheet in place whilst tacking. I had my finger on the workpiece to steady it, and when I struck an arc got an electric shock! Only a little un, but enough to make you say 'b***er me what the blimmin flip was that?'. Do magnets just not like me?
Bet theres a really obvious answer to this one and I'll feel a right div.
