Just to let people know that my broadband connection has been down at home for well over a week & will not be resumed until 28/04 So, my apologies if you have been "ignored" over the weekend/evenings, that's the reason why. Still on at the works though, thank feck.
Oh, and the provider? Tiscali... shower of sh*t, really wouldn't recommend them; I've spent all weekend on the phone to India & I can't sack them and sign up with another provider until I get my "MAC" code (migration authorisation code)

Don't even go there mate,these big corporations don't give a flying you know what about there customers these days.
If ever you have a problem like me being charged twice for my Orange monthly subscription,it costs you more in phone calls,lost time,high blood pressure etc etc than the money you are trying to get back.
And what really gets me is they say they can't call you back as it's company policy which i find incredible when they are also phone company.
I have seen all the positive feedback you get on here Weldquip and it's nice to see that there are still some people who take pride in their buisiness and look after thier customers and i will use you next time i need a new welder.

i had a bad connection with plusnet they were very helpful when i asked for a mac code then i went to sky i know have a betetr internet connection allround faster downloads and conection in general and it only cost a 5 a month on top of the 16 pound sky bill

ow and weldiquip is very good i order from him a few days ago very good comunictation and fast delivery

Eclipse broadband are very good. I download alot, enough to get me kicked off Orange and Tiscali but Eclipse have never bothed me once. You also get full speed 24/7

A man after my own heart, I didn't have a TV until recently when my wife insisted on it. I use Zen Broadband (google it), not the cheapest but I've never had a problem and you can call them and speak to a person in the UK.

Why would anyone want TV when you've got this forum Much more entertaining and informative

i think you're being told a tale by Tiscali. MAC address is a code hard wired into your router or ethernet device and unique to that device.

There should be ways -- ask on one of the computer forums -- PC Plus one is good -- to see if you can discover it.

If someone at Tiscali has told you you need their permission to connect to another supplier, you probably have good grounds for legal action (IANAL).

BT and Virgin have good rep on connection, although Virgin's helplines are staffed by poor sods in India with scripts and obsolete Operating Systems on the screens in front of them.

MAC code and MAC address aren't the same thing fingers .

Yep. Seems to be a UK only rip off idea. Presumably it's for BT use, as it doesn't apply to cable broadband.

Complain to BT?

The ISPs messed themselves up by offering unlimited bandwidth and just throttling the supply. So everyone downloads telly from the BBC and the ISP is slow for everyone at busy times.

Most now state a bandwidth limit, but they still oversell, so there's still throttling. But the ones charging a couple of quid per Gb might be planning to actually supply that (seems to be the going rate for actual bandwidth).

Could be wrong - I'm in the market for a new ISP too, so if you find a good one let me know.

Very good - never had any problems.

I never expected to find a "best ISP" debate on a welders forum - amazing what you find.

For what it's worth I've worked in the IT industry for the last 23 yrs. Broadband reliability is paramount for me. I rely on it to work from home. The alternative is to drive a 78 mile round trip to go into the office. Having used Zen for the last 6yrs and it's no exageration to say I've NEVER had to go to the office because of their service. They're not the cheapest but they consistently rank top in PC Pro surveys and deservedly so. On the rare occasions I need support there's no nonsense - I get straight through to a helpful and technically competent lad in Rochdale (where they're based) and they sort me out.

I guess they're the Weldequip of the ISP world (only less shy about their phone number ). Personally if I needed e-mail to do business I wouldn't risk using the "consumer" cowboys (Sky, Tiscali etc). Talking to friends BT are OK but you're never far from an Indian call centre - if your problems simple fine - if not er ... As in welding you only know how good a supplier is when something goes wrong. You get what you pay for.

Weldequip I hope your problems get fixed (and stay fixed). Don't stand any nonsense over the MAC code. I'm sure your rights are covered by legislation and a well worded threat of adverse publicity e.g. BBC Watchdog might do the trick. Good luck.

Don't know. My workshop is in the middle of nowhere, so theres very rarely anyone to talk to - just a few sheep usually
Still, there are good sides to that - no one sees me make a mistake, no one hears me cursing when I make a mistake, no one complains about noise / fumes / paint ...
