If only I could weld.......!

Hi chaps
I am a newbie to this forum, but I have a very important question that I cannot find an answer to.
As I have an eye condition called Retinitis Centralis Serosa I want to know if I should weld at all. I wanted to buy a TIG/MIG welder to fix some extra bits onto the chassis of my race car in France, but don't want to buy before I know whether I should or not.
My condition is not welding-related as I have never welded much at all. However, with the high cost of mobile welders in France, I wondered if I should buy a unit as I have a load of jobs that I could tackle (with suitable practice).
Anyone have any thoughts? Or experience of retinitis as I understand it can be a welders problem if adequate eye protection is not used.
