I have just bought a MIG (Migronic 166) and would like to know what flow rate of argoshield I should use. The chap at BOC seemed to suggest about double what I use with the TIG. I recon he was trying to sell me more gas
Haha, double tig. I've just bought a tig, yet to practice and learn it, but 99.9% certain it's 10>14 lpm. I mig on 7>9 but cheap guage so probably more!
I've always been told thickness of wire x10. So 0.8mm wire = 8l gas/min, 0.6 = 6l/min etc. - which seem s to work well enough. But I do mostly thinsheet metal.
I run my Mig on .8mm wire at about 7-8lpm, and turn it up a bit if I am working on large work pieces with loads of welding or deep corners to weld into.
A Woz and BP say, but it does depend on the conditions you are working in, by an open door, with a fan running in the shop. and like in our shop if you have any bench specific extraction running, this can be quite strong and if using close to you weld area can suck the gas away also.
Oh dear, it seems the MiG is thirstier for gas than the TIG I always feel that BOC have me by the ankles, trying to shake every last coin out of every pocket.
I have to use the MiG for the first time in anger today; got to blow some sparks into an area I simply can't get the TIG torch.
