18t chassis extension

Heres a job i did extending the rear end of a chassis to allow a longer body to be fitted. I used a lot of 'G' clamps and a 6mm thick flitch place to get the new chassis in line with the end of the exsisting chassis. I 'V' grooved the chassis and root welded before cleaning up and capping it. The Flitch plate was bolted in place the old cross member had just enough room to fit in and be fixed behind the flitch.

I know what you mean troppo but as it wasnt load bearing and had the use of a flitch we can use vertical joints. All the vehicles we work on get checked over by VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency) anyways to ensure they comply with thier standards. Cheers about the welding, the Lincoln i use is a little corker!!

We occasionally stretch wagons like that, when its behind the rear axle if they need stretching between the axles we send them to a specialist, usually though we cut them down. On top of the chassis there is a 5" or 6" c section runner that the body is built off (you can see them under the body being lifted up by the forklift).

Outofthefire, That body came off a different vehicle and we had to relpace the runners to suit the chassis. That alone was a hefty job. 6" runners 8mm thick, they weighed a s**t load.

When ive extended or shortened a chassis between the axles i angle the joints as 'troppo' does. I also use a good sized flitch plate using the same bolts as the manufacturers use.

looks a tidy job. would i be right in saying the capping weld has been done "downhill" from the pics?

Yes Stew it is. Cheating I suppose but is helps reduce the build up if weld and gives more control. For me anyway

It looks the same breed as mine F.J., Lincoln Compact 185, is yours a 230/250 ? I totally agree, tons of umph and a very smooth running machine

Its a 220 Compact run off single phase. I cant fault it but have not that long ago bought a Lincoln Electric 350 Compact 3ph. It was a to good a price to refuse, plus i like the fact i have more welders to play with
