Epoxy 2k primer/paint on brake calipers ?

Hi,

With epoxy being good for chassis parts and engine blocks etc, is it any good for brake calipers and the heat they may get up too etc ?

Also does epoxy have the ability to flex at all, i have a few bits that need flexing to fit back together again ?

If it is any good for calipers would they need to be epoxy primed like usual ?

What makes epoxy so good at what it does, does it have an acid like what etch primer does ?

Also anyone know a good place to buy epoxy paint from ?

Ive seen a website that has a number of different types of anti rust epoxy primer http://www.plasma-coating.net/epoxy-paints-and-primers.html

Epoxy is a primer not a topcoat, in automotive paints anyway.

Will flex a little bit, hard to quantify really. Will be fine on calipers, done a few bikes ones in epoxy+2k topcoats.
Local paint shop should have it, online paints4u.com and poss Nu-Agane, not all sites list all paints as well but list makers names so it can be worth an ask. Only used PPG and Lechler, didn't like the PPG though.

Oh, i have had my sub frame top coated in black epoxy top coat paint, very shiny ??

I did think it would be ok for the calipers, i just need to know for sure.

Ive tried paints 4 u and they seem to be engaged all the time.

Epoxy degrades in UV light, it goes chalky, although my trailer lasted 3 years or so outdoors before the frame chalked up. Might last fine under a car, or a long old time, who knows. If it was me I'd have put a topcoat on it, if it's very glossy, praps it did get one?
It does lay pretty shiney if normal 2k thinners is used, some of them have their own special thinners which seems to make it more matt.

I use paints4u sometimes, just buy online. Not the cheapest but not too bad and for me it's often not worth the time & miles to the paint shop. Their post is good and fast. Usually make the post cost more worthwhile by getting gunwash or panel wipe or something too.

I use it on calipers and its no problem, needs topcoating though, Epoxy itself is not shiny, if its shiny its had topcoat.

There is no acid in epoxy, its basically a mixture of primer and 2 pack epoxy glue, It bonds incredibly well & is very sticky when sprayed.

Not all normal paint suppliers will have it as its primarily a commercial product.
I use Lechlar, tried PPG but didn't like it and the price neither !!!

I tried colorite but they only do pallet deliveries ie £35ish. They gave me a number for a localish place in Nottingham called 'Paint shop supplies'. They do free home delivery cash on delivery.

I shall have to ask my painter because all i asked was to have primer then epoxy top coat and its shiny ??

I might just have the calipers primered then top coated in usual 2k paint because the calipers will get some UV light through the alloys etc.

I thought we said - topcoat will not be epoxy - will be 2k or something. Epoxy topcoat is floor paint and whatever, not automotive topcoats.

Pretty confused now from here and the paint shops etc, i feel iv been told a lie about the process my frame has had.

I can't see where your confused mate, the info you have received here is based on having done it and correct, Paintshops are notorious for giving duff info because they ain't painters.

It was really about people saying epoxy car paint is not shiny but in gloss it is, so i have no doubt the above frame has been coated how i originally wanted it.

All sorted now, the epoxy may get some UV light when parts are inside the engine bay at times, so im going to have it all painted in 2k paint with epoxy primer. I understand the paint industry does involve a lot of info and improvements etc that not all know about.

I never imagined etch would have less bonding than epoxy primer, what makes epoxy primer stick so much better if it has no acid to do so ?

It's to do with the 2 pack epoxy glue, that Langy mentioned in post number 5, on this thread.

Ask what paint was used on the subframe, then you can look up the datasheet and know all there is to know, whether it's a good choice or not.
Could be it's some industrial epoxy topcoat like the one in the other thread, not an auto one. From the datasheet for that one, it says "industrial use where chemical resistance is reqd but not weather resistance", and use epoxy primer. If in doubt, ask the painters and find the product's sheet, praps it's fine.
If it is such an epoxy topcoat then presumably it's UV stable. Epoxy primers aren't but you'd topcoat them.

Without getting too technical its basically a mixture of primer & 2pack epoxy glue, as i posted earlier.

Every situation Jack, Etch was good but Epoxy is the modern way, It sticks like sh*t to a blanket on anything.

Thought that may be the case! Wish I had known. Luckily not too many areas needed Etching on my car.

Would you still use epoxy when priming (if needed) old paint? Does it come with the "filler" type properties that normal 2K filler primer gives?

Epoxy will go over most other paint but the sort of stuff i do is all bare metal.
It doesn't have the same build up like filler primer.
