I (allmost) fixed it

Hey all, sometime ago i bought myself a Clarke 135TE MIG plant for a bit of homework which was advertised as not working. I was confident i could fix it and today i dug it out to try to get to the bottom of the problem.

The wire feed motor was working but not via the trigger so after tracing the feed back though the circuit board i found a resistor to be the faulty part. After removing the resistor and temporaraly bypassing it the feed motor was working fine, so now i just need a new resistor....trouble is i have no idea where to get one from. Can anyone reccomend a supplier of such electrical components, also does anyone have an idea of the type of resistor i would need. It's the large, white, rectangular item on the wire feed circuit board.

Maplins is probably the best bet. Have a look in the links section of this forum, you should be able to get an online copy of the manual which should have the circuit duagram in.

Used them before for capacitors and resistors, not for welders but it's all the same.

If the resistor's not a crispy critter you should be able to read the value off it: from your description it sounds like it'll be a 10 Watt or more rating and this fact suggests it'll be less than 100 Ohms (100R). It may be as low as about half an Ohm (typically 0.47R would be closest to that) depending on where in the circuit it is (in series with the motor fed by the sound of it!).

Not sure if Maplins keep high power resistors anymore; worth a try though.

Thanks for the replies guys, very useful. I'll get on the case when i get home and see what i can dig up.

@Wedg1e:The resistor isn't completely fried (at least not on the outside) and it does have some markings that i may be able to identify to find out what rating it is, thanks.

Good to know, i'll give them a call when i know the specifics of the resistor

I gave Bardwells a call today and got a resistor ordered as well as a load of heatshrink to do the wiring loom in my 205 with. Thanks again for the help.
