hi all, just a quick question regarding soda blasting, the company which i work for is contemplating buying a soda blast to clean down our machines (food environment) due to the high setup cost i was just wondering if you could literally buy the soda blast media and use it in a conventional pressurised sand blast unit, like the type you get from machine mart, surely the process is the same, just that your using soda rather than sand/shot? please explain! thanks, sean

thanks for reply rtb, as you say i reckon there cant be any difference to the actual working of these things, though it does say on the first site you gave me that the 'c1 s can be converted back to use as a sandblaster' so they are suggesting there might be some difference?

just like to put a little input to this,i do high pressure cleaning with water that is,for some time now i've wanted to get into soda blasting i also looked at those products you have showen but theres one thing they dont tell you,for proper dry soda blasting its not just a comp and pot,the must item is a after cooler,this is more explained here

northern powerclean is just up the road from me about 20 miles . wont they sell the media in small amounts. also is it just expendable or re usable??

yet thats the best stuff to use for the food industry,and its very safe for the enviroment

might give em a ring this week if i get the time ask what the score isSee thats something armex wouldn't tell me about it being re-usable,why sell it by the ton only,weird.

eg .what grades pressure and nozzle sizes min quantity of media. if its expendable i cant see any problem with using any blastpot apart from any health reasons in food hygene ?

Hi again,for some unknowen reason the uk armex site has vanished,theres a few uk companys that do soda blasting but hardly any of them that i see tell you where they get it from,guess you'll have to snoop around,just looks to me as a bit of a closed shop.

I got quotes on 25kg bags from several companies.
There is a difference to the pots. If you look up soda blasting you will find a yank company seem to have a good rep, it just so happens there pots are patented, after looking at the patent you can see there is more to the pot than just different metering rates. They flog an eductor to go with the frost pots for soda blasting.
The quotes for soda were 25 quid or so a bag.
as to being reusable, well I would try it in a siphon blaster and reuse it. I don't think it's meant to be though as they go on about the fact it's granular and explodes on contact.
If someone near me wants to split a bag to try it let me know.

i cant see any advantage using it unless u do work for public councills or the food industry and they specify it. as theres diffrent grades of grit . u can use fine sand and theres beadblasting or vapourblasting .any coments on subject anyone ??

i rang northern powerclean about info on blast media . they were verry helpfull they do a fine soda called maintanance xl . they will sell by the 25kg bag at a cost of £19.50 + vat. collect price . they also sell sample bags so u can test varous grades through your jet. what knocks the price up is delivery which is roughly 4 quid a bag .if u look on there site it gives the info on blastpots and equipment .what it says is using there pots the media is metered out more acurately so every grain cleans the parts with no waste saving on media costs. there pots are used with an aftercooler which probably is necessary due to there regulating device .getting clogged with damp media and wouldnt be that simple to clean out .this is just my opinion .an ordinary pot will do the job just as well as the ones they supply ive never had a problem metering sand and beads at a consistent rate and havent wasted any by excess amounts being aplied .as for the aftercooler i havent one . just one water.trap at the pot .what i do is leave the drain off slightly open so any moisture cannot build up in seperator and find its way through the pot. the only place it ever clogs up is in the tee piece at bottom of the pot . rarely so can be easily sorted

u can blast with presure washer and suitable atachment . the aftercooler is to dry and cool the compressed air before delivery to a pot
Hi guys , May i shed a ray of light ? I'm John , a professional blast cleaner in North Wales.
we use Soda and conventional blast cleaning equipment for a wide variety of stripping and cleaning jobs from a carburetor to a castle.
The reasons soda is not successful through regular pots is that , being a very light and fine powder (about the grain size of table salt) it needs fine metering.We can put 150 kg + of conventional grit through our 80cfm pot per hour but our soda pot (also 80cfm) only uses 25-50 kg of bicarb. Soda is also soluble in water and oil and melts at a low temp so unless you have after coolers and excellent water and oil filtration on your supply , it will clog the pot. As it is very light you also need lots of cfm to propel it.
I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have.

mines a screw compressor theres a large oil cooler radiator on it and one for the engine
