Profffeesionaly made, thats what the billet followers were, they were from Newmans. I don't really have money to have stuff done. My experience of pro stuff isn't very good. Like the followers, no way did they work and the error was pretty simple but you have to consider every part they made should have been the same. There are erros like the pushrod relief is not below the center of the pushrod ball socket, so the pushrod was rigid in the hole!
The shaft is the valve lifter[Newmans follower wouldn't touch the base circle with the valve lifter in place!]. All I am doing is putting the engine back together so it's an everyday ride, not a lot I haven't replaced in the engine. It's a little Velocette.
I have several projects with old engines, needing similar cam followers, none of them are easily available. I originally thought I would simply run some beads of stellite over them and regrind them, I suppose I should give it a try, but I was put off by a yank who runs a comany specialising in hardfacing, he gave me a run down on pre and post heat treatment-not exactly my "I ran a few beads over it, and ground to shape" job. I bought a pair of followers from a bloke with an an ice cream container full of followers that had been stellited, none were usable as was, they all needed regrinding and some were not usable cos of large defects, lots were cracked I was told the bits rarely fall off but the cracks do wipe out cams.
Probably best to make a satisfactory pair in steel and go from there. If anything the thing to experiment with would be forging. Some interesting home forging presses on the internet.
