Push or Pull?

I'm interested to know - do you push or pull the rod/torch when welding? I always push the torch to give a flatter weld, with better penetration, but ended up pulling the torch the other week cos i couldnt get in properly - it made quite a difference to the weld profile.

Always taught to push a mig torch, so the robots I program push the torch as well!

Same as Archie ,but the question is slightly misleading ,as i can't register a vote on the poll as I push mig and pull arc?

ps.. voted push as i consider the poll is about mig technique

I normally pull the rod but use the push technique on lighter material no idea what I do on mig as I haven't got one :whistle:

Pull

I pull the torch. I have taken some classes and they taught the class to pull the torch.

Should always push with MIG as the weld area gets complete gas coverage, bead shape, penetration etc

Pull with stick. Mostly push with mig but sometimes pull in tricky situations where i can't see past the shroud very well.

Just for MIG: For thin mild steel on the flat I often pull as it gives more visibility. Probably because I got into the habit of doing that before I knew any better.

For most other MIG normally push. It does make a fair difference to gas coverage - you can see that on aluminium where pull doesn't shield enough.

If i'm working on the bench, then push. On vehicles, whatever will get the job done.

My mig skills are self taught, I learned to gas weld as an apprentice. On the rare occasions I use stick, mainly pull.

Both!

It's common to push when mig welding but when i don't have enough space for the torch i just use the easiest way to go... :ashamed:

Arc welding = pull!

I push on arc and seem to get pretty flat welds, I'm working with AC though and haven't really noticed a great deal of difference either way

Mig though depending on pen, either push or pull...

I tend to use whatever works,mainly push but I think I read on the MILLER site that pull gives slightly more penetration :dontknow:

Push is far nicer but yes, pull does give slightly more pen.
