Thistle

I have a client wanting a set of gates made and wanted thistles on top,so I bought some round baskets and made up tooling to press the tapered part at the top(Where the seeds live in real life).
The first one formed great but the second tore, this was caused by the welded seam marking the tooling and in turn causing a groove in the second one to be pressed and tearing at this point.
To overcome this I used oil and placed the marking on the tool at the seam every time which gave a good result. A wee lick o paint and it will look braw!!!

Nice one Sam.

I was asked to make a thistle sometime ago, used a cheap wire brush (type that go in a drill) for the top.

Looks good Sam, simple and effective, only thistles, or other Scottish themes contained within design?

Just for a reference and, looks like thistle tops are bought, nice railing work bottom crossroad at Edgehead.

This is for the arch next to the pie shop in Pathead.No the design is a rising sun(clients choice) Yes have seen the thistles at edgehead went to look at the villagehall that was up for sale a few years ago.

Was it not the Cranston church hall too many yapping dogs around the back someone is running kennels there.The gate is nothing spectacular but it is what the client wants not one to turn money away tho. p.s. the steak pies are worth a try its a great wee bakers.

Yeh must be Cranston Church area Sam, old Cranston primary school has nothing around it.

I'll check oot steak pie next time I'm passing, purchased SP from butchers at Lauder a while back, it was memorible :laughing:

You should have popped in for a cuppa only 3.5mls from there it is a good butcher but expensive buy our meat by the hefer now lasts a year!

That is a great solution to 'thistle making'! I've been toying with how to make thistles for a while now, and have lots of theories and heard lots of opinions as to the best way... but that looks pretty darn good!

I might just ummm, borrow your idea if you don't mind? Although I'd be doing it "thee olde fashioned way"

Thank you! Client was delighted to see his design in metal, he also threw in a bottle of port and a bottle of red wine for good measure! You would not have got any pies on the way home the shop was probably closed!
