after getting a grinding spark in my eye on satarday, and getting half of it gouged out today with a big needle(in a lot of pain

), i dont want it to happen again, so reccomend me a decent set, prefferaly with a neckband thing so its always to hand, oh and something that wont scratch easily, thanks

Hurts doesnt it!

I use Bolle ones - don't know the exact make, but have blue arms and come with a neck strap. Not bad in price and last a good while.
Recently started using full goggles cos the sparks can get behind them on odd occasions - we use the uvex ones - look a bit like ski goggles.
Although today i have been grinding for nearly 6 hours! - full face screen and hood. Nasty.

grinding sucks eh?, i was grinding 20 years worth of paint on a friends truck chassis to get back to some bare metal for a decent paint job (found some tinfoil underneath :laughing:

) it was about 4 hours worth and when my safety glasses got all scratched and covered with rust to the point that i couldent see i took them off for 2 mins,then comes the splinter, typical

I've got Wurth ones which are fine. They also come with a strap. Never liked the full face mask as I always manage to steam it up but there are times I'd wear one instead of specs.

one of the best bits advise i've had is have more than one pair, leave them near what you use them for and then your more likely to use them

Sorry to go all 'elf 'n safety on you but........

Glasses - even wrap-around, with side plates or whatever - are NOT appropriate PPE for cutting/grinding under any circumstances. Goggles or full face shield (with safety glasses under are the minimum.

Glasses are merely for general walk about, spannering, lathe-work etc.

I prefer full face shield - and when it steams up it's time for a little rest.

The number of my fitters with 'must have got dust in my eye boss' was legion! And I know they were just 'having a little tickle with the grinder boss', because I pulled one up at nearly every saftey walkabout I ever made.

Please don't take shortcuts with your eyes.

Worth spending the money on eye protection and spare sets (but not on the eBay item you posted) - it's cheaper than the lost work after your anaesthetic wears off. Was a month lost work for me after the last time I went to the eye doctor. Think I posted pictures here, but please nobody link them as I wasn't looking my best.

For goggles the UVEX ones have started to come with a foam section between goggle and face. Makes them much more comfortable and fills the gap.

Full face would of course protect the rest of the face, and they tend to be recommended by pros on here, but I worry about rebounding sparks. Perhaps un-necessarily?

Don't know of any that are scratch resistant, or any that can be T-cutted to restore some vision without messing the fancy coatings up.

If you use a full-face shield tape a piece of polycarbonate cut from a drinks bottle on it, this will protect it from scratching.

UVEX are famous for making ski/snowboard googles, and Bolle. They can be anything from 40 quid a pair up to £100+

so the old safety goggle equivalents are dirt cheap

I use Uvex ones, nice and enclosed, and big enough to go over prescription glasses aswell.
Tend to swap between these two-

i buy a new pair every friday, £2.50, best money i spend all week, have had more than my share of eye complaints, nothing majour though. stuck my finger in my eye when pulling on a jumper a month ago, felt like a right clown, they did'nt bat an eye lid (excuse the pun) in the eye and ear though, they said it happens a lot, very painful.

Got fed up of taking risks cos my old goggles were scratched so bought the following of ebay.
Bolle vipers, for the workshop.
Bolle bandido's for sunny days and cycling
Bolle blast indirect vented mask with removable lower face shield.

Trouble is the lower face shield does'nt allow me to wear my twin canister type dust mask, only really good for use with the cheap disposable dust masks.
