Just got back from Halfords with a brand new, paid for! HOF213 oil filter (Metro, K-Series engine). It will screw onto 1/2 BSP parallel for a few threads and then locks (this changes a problem into a feature). The noise level is vastly reduced, I think I'll try this on my Clarke compressor.

Fitted one to my Clarke compressor. Had to reduce the inlet port from 3/4 inch BSP to 1/2 inch. It's quietened it down noticeable, especially the lower note.

This is a pic of the setup on the Westinghouse compressor:

I've got them on my small compressors.
I first started putting them on compressors in the 80s.
If I needed something larger , I would use one of these.http://www.class8truckparts.com/Flee...B001IXZOJU.htm
There's a lot of options if you use marine, truck transmission and hydraulic filters.
Some have drainback valves and some don't.

I might fit 2 on the Clarke with a 1/2" T-piece and omit the reducer bush, but it seems OK at the moment.

As regards the motor temperature it depends on the rating of the insulation, but generally speaking as long as the motor housing doesn't get too hot to put your hand on, it'll be fine.
