Women's Gloves!

Hello everybody!

I'm a newbie and I want to learn MIG welding. I've got a second-hand Clarke Turbo 100EN and now I am looking for some safety equipment. In England it seems really hard to find welding gloves for women! All the gloves i saw in the shops are too big for my hands. In one glove I could fit both hands!

Here's the question: does anyone know any specialized shop in the UK selling welding and safety equipment for women?

Thanks in advance for answering, so that I could avoid paying the extra postage costs if ordering them from the USA and saving time of course!

If you purchase smallest glove possible, you will find they will shrink after a while with the heat, failing this, if you have a Costco store close to you, the do a 3, off pair of really good gardening glove, have to admit I have used them if welding at home. I take your point though, mig gloves can be a tad HUGE.

Hmmmm they do tend to only make washing up gloves in ladies sizes for some reason

Seriously though, I have not heard of specifically women's welding gloves, but I know that any decent welding supplier.........TH Welding is on Dicker Mill Ind Est, in Hertford, will be able to supply some small tig gloves, they should be ok for you.

The big MMA/Mig welding gauntlets (Green/Red/Blue etc) are usually massive and they are only any good if you are welding for a long time at fairly high amps, something I doubt a DIYer will be doing, so Tig Gauntlets will probably better suited in any case.

P.S......one of the members here.....Sparkey, is also a lady welder......although she might have hands like shovels for all I know, maybe she could shed some light on it

Have a look at leather gardening gloves (mainly aimed at women!). Probably be perfect for what you're doing unless you're welding heavy plate

hihi!!! nope, no shovels here Matt!! very small ladies hands!! :laughing:

I always take the size 7 here (small gloves with a rubberish coating on it) and then i put on my leather ones size 8 (think those are the smallest that exist on leather)
If i'm welding too small parts i'll just put on 2 pair of those small gloves...
Unfortunatly i don't think there exists something like lady size in welding gear..

Well you get used to the fact of wearing gloves that are too big for you.... it just gave me the strange tic to pull them up every 5 minutes!!lol :laughing:

ps: i'm afraid the sizes here aren't the same as in the uk....

Thanks! I will try leather gardening gloves or I will follow the suggestion of Sparkey; in the worse case scenario i will order them in the USA where there's a shop selling MIG gloves and work equipment for ladies..

yeah you just have to work out a bit which gloves work for you!
Depends on what you're welding too! if it get's too hot those small gloves wont do...and even when wearing gloves you will get burnt sometimes! don't worry you will get used to it...

Are you going to learn yourself how to weld or take a class or.....?

Yes, I agree with Sparkey, there's far too few women welders on here. A few have joined and posted once, never to be seen again, one became quite a regular but suddenly left without warning, I think things got slightly too 'blokey' in a few posts and she got bored of it. Ratty is another female regular but she's not been on here for a little while, she does tend to be very busy though so I guess that's what's keeping her away, no-one has upset her, they wouldn't dare! :laughing:

The mods and Malcolm are always on the ball so if anything is said out of order then the poster will soon know about it

Hello everybody! I'm looking for the safety gear still..
Here's another question: which kind of respiratory mask do you wear while welding? Is it possible to wear the one with the changeable filters? (the one with the so called pancake filters) I mean, is there's sufficient space to wear it under the head shield? Or do I need to use a flexible respiratory mask? Let me know, every suggestion is appreciated since I've never welded before.
..and of course I'll be more present here when I will be operative and I am sure I will have a lot of questions for you!

About myself: first of all I am Italian and I want to learn MIG welding so that I can switch from wood to metal in order to produce longer lasting art works and, more precisely, hanging mobiles, that's what i do.

Answering to Sparkey: I think I am going to learn alone (with the virtual help of the members of this forum, of course

and probably with the help of my neighbor who was a professional welder, I hope he will have some spare time to help me out with suggestions at least, since I am not sure there are MIG welding courses in the area where I live.

Hi, I think you'd struggle to fit a 'half mask' under the head shield comfortably. To be totally honest, as long as you've got decent ventilation and you're not welding anything nasty like galvanised or other coated steel and you keep your face away from the main fumes then you probably won't need to wear a mask. If you'd prefer ton wear one then something like this

would be ideal.

Yes, wozzer's right about the mask, as long as your workspace is well ventilated i don't think you need to wear a mask! As for your artwork you are going to weld, it will be small welds on fairly thin metal i guess? (if it's too heavy your mobiles won't work..

)
If you still feel the fumes are bothering you you could install a small ventilator (fan) BUT, be carefull if you're going to weld with shielding-gas that the gas does not get blown away!! (it'll make your welds porous, don't worry we'll discuss that later!

I use leather gloves. There are some made by a company that sells them at walmart in the gardening area, lamont something or other. Will have to look. Anyway, you can usually get some custom leather gauntlets from companies like USA FOXX and FUR for a decent price, or Furs for Fun. Same deal. Custom, cheap, awesome.

Hi all, I'm new here. Found this site purely by chance as, like the first author, I am looking for small ladies welding gloves. We have just taken on a female welder/fabricator and trying to find ladies PPE is a nightmare. I am looking at all the options offered above an thank you all for your help. I will certainly passing by again to see if anyone else has any advice and the support on here is immeasurable.

As stated above, Try some decent leather ladies gardening gloves,You could also use some leather sleeves with them for lower arm protection if required.

They're too bloody thick for beekeeping, but I imagine they'd be perfect for welding - lower arms covered too. You may be able to get them cheaper if you look around, these were just the top of the list...

I would be nice if gloves to fitted , regardless of gender.

Everytime I go to buy a new pair of TIG gloves I end up going through the whole pile, trying to find a pair that have at least been sewn together correctly. Never mind fitting me.

I find mechanics gloves with leather palms are far better.

Black leather gloves have never been cheaper, I bought a pair last winter in Aldi for £5, and they were still flogging the smaller sizes months later; a pair of those with a gauntlet sewn on, or even worn with a seperate gauntlet should do the job. You might burn through them pretty quickly while learning(I certainly got through a couple of pairs of cheap tig gauntlets) but they're cheap enough to be disposable.
