My garage antics.

I thought I would put this in the automotive thread as 99.9% of my stuff is car/bike related and it will be neater all in one thread.

Today's job was 2.5" stainless mid-pipe for a Mazda Eunos(MX5)
It was pikey cut and welded as it was for a mate and he didn't want to pay for any bends.

Flanges welded up before hand.

After a few trips backwards and forward I had a complete pipe welded up.

Bolted up and ready for action.

great stuff, where do you get your stainless 2 bolt flanges and how much were they?
did it warp at all when it was welded?

im hoping to make an exhaust for my civic system this week

The flanges were bought off eBay for around £15 IIRC.
They were only mild, again due to cost, but worked out favorable as they didn't warp at all.

haha. ive looked at the price of stainless 2 bolt flanges and the price of stainless v band clamps and the v band clamps seem to work out cheaper than buying 2 flanges and you dont need a gasket and quicker to remove if it has to come off so ive ordered one of those.

Precisely, plus they are so much more reliable as the lack of gasket means there is no gasket to blow out too !

Win win IMO

i just hope i dont warp it when i weld it lol. hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. ive got most of my centre section tacked together now, made a start on mounting the back box too.

Although my experience is quite limited at the moment I didn't suffer from the dreaded warp at all. I just did about 1-1.5" of weld and then moved to a different part of the pipe and come back and forth like that and as far as I could tell from mounting it back up it didn't move a single mm ! Was very pleased lol.

I have a full manifold back to do on a Corolla T Sport soon too so will try and get some pics again.

I do 3 hole stainless flanges for £7.50, much better than 2 hole

I was going to run a quick bead around but with the pipe fully pushed in so it is flush with the other side of the flange it meets the pipe from the other side so deemed it unnecessary.

May do next time and see if it is worth the extra weld run.

There is no other weld run, just fuse weld inside, makes a much neater job.

As in leave it on the outside of the flange and just weld the inside ?

Never thought of it like that.

People like to see welds normally ha.

I'll give it a go on my mx5 and see how it goes.

What are you using to fix them to the breeze block ? Do you know how much weight it will hold ?

PS: what was the gauge of the tubing for the exhausts? Looks good. I may have a go at that myself, next time i do an exhaust. Also what is this you mention about not using gaskets ?
