In that case the best thing to do is set the pot in the middle and measure it. If it reads around 23K it's a linear pot, if it's way higher or lower it's a log pot.

The only rent free gas I know of in Birmingham is Air Liquide AlBee cylinders. I just picked one up from Midland Welding near the Airport but there may be an Air Liquide distributor nearer to you, check their website.
I got a quote today from a local stockist, £139.25 for the 11 ltr cylinder (argon or argon/co2 mix) plus £10.99 for the quick release fitting that attaches the hose to the regulator.
