Thanks buddy, My sense of humour has me star gazing at the sun through a piece of tinted glass...... Joking of course, no, I actually spent my apprenticeship with a periscope manufacturer, and the optics fellows, well, phrases like funny farm were used, mainly because they were so academic they...
OK pdg, that sounds quite good, does that mean that if it fails all together, it reaches a density sufficient to handle the UV? - I thought the glass had to be dark enough to examine the flame.
Absolutement!
Yes, I did actually experiment with the arc setting, but was maybe a bit nervy about that in case I hurt my eyes - but I shall go on the principle o less intensity - definitely worth a further try angellonewolf (is the sensitivity increased by going from 5 to 9 or the other way...
Fascinating topic - I started life with a technical apprenticeship with one of the three periscope makers in the world, and enjoyed metalwork, patternmaking (in wood), drawing office and finally degenerated to the research laboratories - It was great, and I wouldn't have swapped a minute.

Art Nouveau, retro, call it what you will, I would gladly give it a home...

My Auto dark helmet seems to vary in intensity, and although I haven't suffered any eye damage, I find it's flashing from dark green to black quite unnerving - I went back to using my old hat, but when you've tried auto - I find this flashing from one intensity to the other worse on TIG than MIG...
Jon - most of the local colleges do a course on basic welding - watching and practising makes it incredible, you won't beleive how good you can get at it.
Halfords presently do a wee book on welding -brilliant.
Wear gauntlets, rest one hand palm facing you, and the other hand on top of that...
Sounds good, but screwfix are offering a tig unit with all bits for £250 - if you've done gas, tig is wonderful - am I allowed to say that on this forum??? I wouldn't part with my mig...........
