thanks for all the ideas guys. I might have access to some small rod, ie 3 or 4mm cut offs that might do the trick. Would the welding rods, gas or tig stand up to heat from the fire without bending or buckling? The idea is to have a gate made from small diameter rod and some flat for the outer...
click on the "post reply" button have a look near the top for the paper clip picture, click it and then browse your pc to where you have saved the image, double click it and then click upload. I think.

I want it about the size of an A4 piece of paper, and thinking of it now it is probably better made from rod as it will let the heat through better than a piece of sheet and also not block the view of flames. Think 6mm might be a bit big for something that size though, what would be the best way...
I'm going to make a gate to fit inside my fireplace, all pretty simple apart from the fact I want a thistle in the design. My house is called Thistle Cottage and we have stained glass thistle design in one of our windows. I want to use the same design and incorporate it into the gate. I will...
As Snooper says use a thin piece of copper wire to replace the track. Has the track just lifted and broken or has it blown, ie does it or the board have any burn marks. If it does then there will almost certainly be a faulty component somewhere. Have a good look at all the components and relays...
I for one would suggest you can't! It's not an exact science, or at least that is what experience has taught me over the last few years, can anybody see the billy goats?
as well as spybot also get adaware which is free to download, whatever one doesn't pick up the other should. Commodo antivirus also has a free version that contains anti spyware software. I use all three and have never had any conflicts and aint had a virus for a long time. I "think" it is a...
As BS says, if you are only looking for 16 amp supply and there is already a 2.5 cable then the job is done and no more to think about! Hopefully it will be 4mm or bigger and you truly will be laughing.

left hand side is the home made one, to me the holes are very slightly off centre and look drilled/machined. The holes on the right hand one look like they have been punched, and the rounded ends on the right hand one also look more like being cut/stamped whereas left hand one looks rounded off...
seal skin socks are great, but really expensive. Great when out all day in the cold fishing or shooting. Apart from them I love plain pure cotton socks as they help to stop your feet from stinking too.

Pop rivets is the way to go. Be VERY gentle when drilling through the skin, only keep enough pressure on to go through it and no more. Dont know the type of freezer you have but as suggested above some of them have pipework running through the skin, break a pipe and you will have to bin it! If...
Just took a quick pick of the fire basket insert I made, and looking at it perhaps I REALLY need to clean it out more often. (sorry for the picture quality)
That certainly could be part of the problem:ashamed:
As for the grill from the foundry, I would have to have them made the right size. I made the insert/basket thing to fit a very odd shaped fireplace. I think for the short term I will clean out more often and make a new one out of the half...
Might be a poor burning wood, but if I lived closer I would take as many as I could get, free wood is good wood!!! Just mix it up a little with some decent stuff. I go through shed loads of pine and mahogany that burns real quick but I mix it with some cherry, apple, oak, beech etc and it's fine...
Last year I made a nice fire basket as I A) couldnt find one to fit, and B) didnt have the pennies to buy a custom made one. Basically what the coal or wood sits on is a trapezoid grill made from some round bar and welded up, think it was about 5mm dia steel. Tonight when cleaning out the fire...
My personal preference is on timed as well, couple of hours in the morning and then again before getting home from work. I try my best to have the stat at 18 but the other half keeps turning it up instead of putting a jumper herself or the kids. If I know its going to be a cold night I will...
