Not wanting to creep too far off topic here, but does anyone know where you can buy both the blue 16A plugs and more importantly the correct sockets to use with them online (I'm in the UK btw)?
Since buying my new welder I have decided to get a proper circuit for the welder setup to the...
Its the Feb 2007 edition of Classic & Sportscar. Don't get too excited though, its only a one pager on all the models (7 on test in total).
The Butters they review is the 170C and they list price as 279GBP inc VAT, and it scores 9/10. Best Budget choice is a Sureweld Monomig 152 Turbo @ 257...
Thats great news Steve.
To be honest I can't see why people would go for the MTA unit over the Portamig given the quality reg and torch, seems a false economy to me, but there you go.
The machines are very high quality.
One of this months classic car magazines reviews the MTA / Portamig...
David - thanks for that info. Do you have any more info on the single part clear available from UPOL? Is it a water based product?
I have to confess I didn't realise that water based paint would also need isocyanate based hardeners. I guess by definition though all 2 pack (hardener based)...
My concern exactly, and in reality the main reason I have held off investing in any painting euip to date. If I'm honest its not the "environmentally friendly" nature of water based paints that appeals, just the significantly reduced chance of doing some serious damage to myself compared to...
I'd be interested to hear what others use on the glove front. I know they are pricey, but these reflective ESAB ones look like they would stand up to a fair bit of heat:

I have been looking into HVLP as well for car bodywork with an...
I won't get a chance to have a play with it in earnest until my Portamig arrives and I source some gas, but initial impressions are good.
Project Gordini eh - would that be one of the R5 Gordini's? I have great memories of a 3 week camping trip a long time ago in the South of France driving...
I've just taken delivery of one of the dogs dangly 5-13 ones and have to say they are *very* nice. Particularly like the grinding setting.
Granted they do a look a bit odd, but very light and robust with plenty of adjustment.
Chris
Hi Andy,
I'm only planning to be an "occasional" user, but in the end I went with the Portamig 181 after seeing the feedback from those that have them. I can see your reluctance though as they aren't cheap... although I don't want to be buying again in 2 years time if you get my drift ;) ...
If there is one local to you I'd just ring them up and ask - thats what I did. I think most tubing and box section comes in standard diameters and thicknesses. The stuff I got may have been 2.5mm thick on reflection - can't remember.
If you know someone that buys the stuff regularly they can...
I'd say your best bet was to try and find somewhere local that avoids having to get the stuff delivered.
When I bought some mild steel about 6 months ago I found a lot of places willing to deliver, but only in large quantities and the cost was prohibitive (I guess delivery cost is probably...
Yup it sounds like the same course.
Don't know if the same guy is teaching it, I think maybe his name was Gary? In his thirties at a guess, used to run a bodyshop, also teaches the full time vehicle refinishing course. Very nice guy, good teacher and knows his stuff.
First week was the...

Is the part time prospectus course guide with the welding course I took. Course only runs every few months though.
I am planning to take their vehicle body refinishing course somtime in the next year. 10 weeks, one evening a week and cost is...
From my experience you may struggle around London / home counties to find many to choose from.
Your local council website should have details of local colleges and you can ring round and check out their sites.
I ended up doing an excellent intro to welding course at Walhamstow college in...
Well, a trip to the classic car show this weekend has got my restoration motivation back on track, and I will also hopefully shortly be joining the ranks of Portamig owners having gone for the 181.
Also couldn't resist one of the new ESAB Eyetech II auto helmets, so went for one of those too...
Thanks Ashley. I'm going with the Portamig, and hopefully one of those nice looking new ESAB auto darkening helmets
Sounds like the manufacturers still have a way to go on perfecting the durability of the inverter technology.
Cheers,
Chris
A friend mentioned these when we were talking about my impending MIG purchase and I am curious to know more? Seems like a fairly recent technology using electronics instead of a transformer.
From what I have read it seems the main downside is the risk of the unit failing as due to the...
Thanks weldequip.
I'm nearly ready to order, just need to finalise the list of ancilleries I need, plus sort out my argoshield supply and reg. I know the bottle rental is expensive from the likes of BOC, but it sounds like the small disposable bottles work out pricey anyway, plus I need lots...
